Awards & Recognitions
Rodney L. Piatt, President of Horizon Hospitality LLC was awarded Choice Hotels International’s Developer of the Year Award at their annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in May, 2010.
Julia Miller, General Manager of the Homewood Suites Southpointe was awarded the national Spirit of Pride Award for Hampton Inns for the 2nd Quarter of 2009. Julia was the Front Office Manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites Meadow Lands during the 2nd Quarter of 2009 prior to her promotion to General Manager of the Homewood Suites Southpointe hotel.
Lorrie Turnage-Downs of the Hampton Inn & Suites Blairsville was awarded the national Spirit of Hampton Award for Hampton Inns for the 2nd Quarter of 2010. Lorrie is currently a Front Desk Agent.
The Hampton Inn & Suites Blairsville has been honored with inclusion in Hampton Inns Circle of Excellence. This honor represents hotels considered in the top ten percent of all Hampton Inns nationwide.
Executive Leadership – Rodney L. Piatt
Rodney L. Piatt is President of Horizon Properties Group which he founded in 1996 and Horizon Hospitality LLC. Mr. Piatt currently holds a number of business leadership positions including Vice Chairman and Lead Independent Director of Mylan, Inc. (MYL-Nasdaq); Director of Accutrex Products, Inc.; and CEO and Director of Lincoln Manufacturing, Inc.
From 1979 to 1996, Mr. Piatt served as President and Director of Millcraft Industries, a multidimensional company primarily focused on the steel and real estate industries.
From 1974 to 1979, Mr. Piatt was with Ernst & Ernst. Mr. Piatt received a Bachelors of Science in accounting degree from the University of Tampa in 1974. He is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania and a past member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Executive Leadership – Gina Johnston
Gina is the Vice President of Horizon Hospitality LLC. She plays a key role in the development of new hotel properties, their ongoing operations, property finances and the sales and marketing of the current portfolio of hotel properties. Her goal is to consistently provide a first class facility and hire talented employees that focus on providing outstanding guest services.
Prior to joining Horizon Hospitality, Gina was the General Manager for an upscale Golf and Tennis Resort in Port St. Lucie, Florida for ten years. She has also assisted in the management of our affiliated Southpointe Golf Club, a private golf club in Southpointe, Pennsylvania.
Gina has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Auburn University where she was a member of the women’s golf and track teams. She went on to play professional golf for a few years before starting her family.
Executive Leadership – Michele Angelo
Michele is the Corporate Controller for Horizon Hospitality LLC. Michele brings a strong 14 year hospitality career to Horizon Hospitality. Michele’s hospitality background is an excellent mix of financial and food and beverage operations management experience. Michele’s hospitality career began in 1996 as Assistant Director of Food and Beverage with the Marriott Green Tree in Pittsburgh, PA. Venturing back to her financial management roots, Michele joined Sage Hospitality and the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel as Assistant Controller in 2001. For Sage Hospitality, Michele has provided training and financial management support for the Renaissance and other hotels as a travel trainer and financial support specialist. Michele has developed secure policies and procedures for both accounting and operations in her past and will bring those solid principles to the Horizon Hospitality family of hotels.
Michele is a 1992 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Enjoying spending time with her family and the great outdoors fills Michele’s leisure time. Michele is an avid golfer, winning a long drive contest and enjoys camping and fishing in Pymatuming State Park.
Executive Leadership - Stacy Newmaster
Stacy Newmaster is the Corporate Human Resources Manager for Horizon Hospitality, LLC. Stacy has 15 plus years of experience in the Human Resources discipline working with hospitality and food service leaders such as Interstate Hotels and Resorts, Carlson Hotels Worldwide and ARAMARK Corporation. Her experience includes benefits administration, property acquisitions, labor relations, workers’ compensation and employee development and retention. Stacy’s knowledge provides our company and managed hotels with a solid work environment and business ethic that promotes growth of our employees within the company. Her goal is to keep well informed regarding the many changing laws and procedures that relate to the hospitality industry and insure that each of our properties are always in compliance. Stacy is a member of the national Society of Human Resources Management organization.
Stacy has a Bachelors of Science degree in Office Administration/Sytems from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She spends most of her free time with her husband and two children doing family activities. They enjoy watching Pittsburgh sports teams and love the outdoors.
Director of Engineering/Project Manager - Jason Yu
Jason joins Horizon Hospitality and brings with him 20 years of hotel experience including time spent at limited and select and full service properties. He is familiar with and worked at Hyatt, Marriott, Inter-Continental, Starwood and Hilton properties. His past roles include Director of Operations, Assistant General Manager, Project Manager, and Director of Housekeeping. Ten years of his hotel experience comes from a position of Corporate Director of Engineering where he oversaw 25 limited service hotels. Jason has a vast knowledge in computers and handles most of the companies IT issues. Having participated as part of an opening team/rebranding team with six hotels, he is an important team member on our development side as well.
Jason has a Computer Engineering degree from The University of Southern California. He loves to exercise, as he is a Triathlon competitor and he is a Certified ACE Trainer since 2003.

Property Manager – Doug Brewster
Doug is the General Manager of the Cambria Suites Washington, PA at Pittsburgh at CONSOL Energy Center. Doug has enjoyed a successful career in the hotel industry since 1995 when he started as a laundry attendant with the Holiday Inn. In 1999, Doug was promoted to Assistant General Manager for Marriott in Memphis, Tennessee and was promoted to General Manager after 6 months of service. Doug left Memphis, home of the world’s best barbecue in 2002 for Orlando, Florida for an opportunity to open a Homewood Suites by Hilton property. At this time, Doug was with Buffalo Lodging Associates. While a General Manager with Buffalo Lodging Associates, Doug opened several hotel properties for them. During 2007, Doug joined the Horizon Hospitality family of hotels and opened the Hampton Inn & Suites Pittsburgh-Meadow Lands. In September, 2009, Doug opened the Homewood Suites by Hilton Pittsburgh-Southpointe property for Horizon Hospitality. As Horizon branched into Choice Hotel properties in 2010 Doug opened and managed the Cambria Suites Washington PA for 4 years until August 2014 and has now landed his current manager role in the downtown Pittsburgh market.
Doug is a 1999 graduate of Wright State University, in Dayton, Ohio. Doug is also active in the Washington County community and enjoys traveling and spending time with his three children. In addition, Doug is an avid and skilled golfer and one of The Ohio State Buckeye’s biggest fans.
Property Manager – Melissa DeHaven
Melissa became the General Manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites Blairsville at the start of 2013 after working her way up through the ranks since the hotel opened in August of 2007. With previous experience in the restaurant business, her interest was sparked to move into the hospitality field when Chestnut Ridge Hotel first opened. She worked breakfast and front desk showing a great deal of dedication, energy and knowledge which lead her to gaining the assistant general manager position in June of 2008. Attending Westmoreland County Community College with her three associate degrees in Restaurant Management, Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts has helped her achieve her fast track to Hotel Management. Melissa is a very dedicated individual who is constantly looking to make her hotel the very best in her market. A strong emphasis on guest service is a high priority for Melissa. In her spare time away from work she enjoys cooking for family and friends and travelling. Melissa was awarded the distinguished Alumni award for WCCC in 2009.
Property Manager - Shane Welter
Horizon Hospitality welcomes their new General Manager of the Hampton Inn Waynesburg. Shane Welter, a resident of Uniontown, PA started as General Manager in February 2012. He grew up in Preston County, WV and graduated from Preston High School. Shane attended WVU where he received degrees in both Accounting and Finance. He was previously employed as General Manager at the Microtel in Hazelton, WV for the past five years. Shane's personal philosophy for success is to do the right thing and give back to others. His hope is to make these values a major part of his employment at the Hampton Inn. Shane's immediate family is wife Debbie and daughter Taylor. He looks forward to working with the Waynesburg community to make the Hampton Inn a great amenity in the area.
Property Manager - David Vesely
David Vesely is the General Manager of the Hampton Inn Bridgeville in Bridgeville, Pa. David started with Horizon Hospitality as the Assistant General Manager of the Hampton Inn Waynesburg opening the hotel back in March 2013. Within six months, David was promoted to General Manager of the Hampton Inn Bridgeville. He is a great communicator and pays close attention to details. David started his hospitality career at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa in Farmington, Pa. He worked both casual and fine dining, banquets, and at the Woodlands Spa. He has worked as a restaurant manager for a golf club in Uniontown, Pa. David is a graduate of Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood, Pa with an Associate's Degree in Foodservice Management and a graduate of Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa with a Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management.
Property Manager – Danielle Hixon
Danielle is the General Manager and Director of Sales of the Hampton Inn Butler, PA. A native to the area since 1992, she moved back to the Pittsburgh region after graduating from Philadelphia University in 2008 with her Bachelor's degree in Architecture. Her career path turned toward the hospitality field when she became a front desk agent at a dual Hilton and Homewood Suites property in Philadelphia during college. As her strong interest grew, she continued to excel and succeed, working her way up through multiple Hilton properties with varied positions within Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and Hilton Garden Inn throughout the State of Pennsylvania. Danielle's primary and most significant focus is to bring a sense of culture and pride to the hotel by creating strong relationships and bonds between customers and employees. Thus far, the opening of the Hampton Inn Butler in December, 2014 is one of the finest and best experiences in her career. While away from the hotel, she enjoys spending time with family and continues to flourish in her photography business.
Property Manager - Megan Wiley Igo
Megan is the General Manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites in Harmarville, PA, located off exit 48 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Harmar Township. Megan started her career in the hotel industry as a housekeeping attendant in 2003. Showing hard work and enthusiasm for her job she was promoted to the Executive Housekeeper in two years. After just one year at this position Megan then received another promotion to Assistant General Manager, overseeing a two hotel property. Within two years Megan was again promoted within the company to the General Manager position of a 152-room Quality Inn in Harmar. After four years at this property and with the demolition of her Quality Inn she is named the General Manager of this exciting new 108-room Hampton property. While under construction she has been assisting at Horizon’s Hampton Inn Pittsburgh-Bridgeville.
Megan has a son, Nathan, who will be graduating high school in 2015. Megan has a love for dogs and is a participant in a K9 training academy, which trains dogs to be therapy and service animals. She is also involved in training Dobermans to be Seeing Eye dogs for charity. She also involves herself in a charity called the 501st, which is a star wars based charity that visits terminally ill children to brighten their day.
